The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM) celebrated its 70th anniversary with the theme “BSWM: Taking the lead in the Asian Soil Partnership Governance 2021–2023” on June 2, 2021.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Assistant Representative for Programmes Tamara Palis-Duran, Global Soil Partnership Secretary Dr. Ronald Vargas, and representatives from partner agencies joined the BSWM family led by Director Sonia Salguero for the celebration.

Secretary Dar congratulated the BSWM for the 70 years of service and for taking the lead in the Asian Soil Partnership (ASP), which is another milestone for the agency as Director Salguero has been elected as the ASP Chairperson for 2021-2023.

The BSWM will lead 24 Asian member countries in working towards the attainment of the goals of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), which has the mandate of improving the governance of limited soil resources for food security and essential ecosystem services.

The highlights of accomplishments for the following GSP Pillars of Action were discussed during the event: 1) Promote sustainable management of soil resources for soil protection, conservation and sustainable productivity; 2) Encourage investment, technical cooperation, policy, education awareness and extension in soil; 3) Promote targeted soil research and development focusing on identified gaps and priorities and synergies with related productive, environmental and social development actions; 4) Enhance the quantity and quality of soil data and information; and 5) Harmonize methods, measurements, and indicators for the sustainable management and protection of soil resources.
