The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) and the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to solidify their partnership for the DBP Seed Bank Project, on December 20, 2021.

The project aims to serve as a platform to organize seed nurseries of indigenous and endemic species of native trees and bamboo, which is recognized as a high-value crop by the DA.

It also aims to restore upland watersheds by investing in communities, as well as to develop small-, micro-, and medium-sized forests and agri-enterprises to spur rural economies in the country.

According to BPI Director George Culaste, the project is expected to mitigate climate change through the cultivation of indigenous flora species and fruit trees.

The DBP Seed Bank Project utilizes the BPI’s expertise in identifying plant species and suitable sites for seed nurseries.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar, represented by Chief-of-Staff and Undersecretary Leo Sebastian, extended his gratitude to the DBP. “This Seed Bank Project will not be possible without this collaboration with DBP to gather native seeds and wildlings, as well as for its germination and propagation,” he said in a statement.

Also present during the event were DBP President and CEO Emmanuel Herbosa, DBP Senior Vice President Paul Lazaro, and other officials from all three institutions. (Photo by Ardy Tompong, DA-AFID)
