Agriculture Secretary William Dar and Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez hold a joint virtual presser on April 8, 2021 assuring the public that strategic measures are being done to prevent price hikes and shortage of food, particularly pork, as the 60-day price cap for pork and chicken ends.

Secretary Dar said that to help stabilize food prices and inflation, there are ongoing efforts to increase the supply of key agricultural commodities. These include the priority program for local hog repopulation, continued delivery of hogs from provinces free of African swine fever (ASF), and elevated support for backyard and commercial hog raisers.

In line with the said proposal, the DA and DTI also agreed to implement a suggested retail price (SRP) for imported pork based on consultations with the technical team and hog raisers and producers.

The general agreement on imported pork include the need for sellers and retailers to comply to the guidelines on hygienic handling of imported pork and labelling their products as imported pork and the creation of a Compliance Monitoring Team to ensure that the SRP on imported pork will be strictly observed.

In terms of the movement of hogs from ASF-free zones to the NCR Plus, the agri chief reiterated that DA will continue to provide transport assistance to hog raisers. (Photos by Adora Rodriguez, DA-AFID)
