Fifteen Filipinos are set to embark on higher education stateside as the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Philippine-American Educational Foundation (PAEF) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) allowing them to pursue degree and non-degree study programs in the United States under the Fulbright Philippines Agriculture Scholarship Program (FPASP).

On June 22, DA Secretary William Dar and PAEF Board Chairperson Philip Roskamp forged the partnership, which aims to accelerate the transformation of the agri-fishery sector through a sustained career in agriculture.

Through the agreement, PhP35 million will fund the 15 scholars, to be selected from all over the country. And with the CHED funding from agriculture, the Philippine government will be spending around US$1.3 million dollars for agriculture-related studies in the next three to five years.

Through FPASP, and under the collaboration of PAEF and the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), scholars are granted monthly maintenance allowance, books and supplies allowance, health and accident insurance, and round trip international airfare.

Since its establishment in 1999, the program was able to support 143 scholars, wherein 84 obtained their M.S. degrees, 30 completed their Ph.D. degrees, and 29 conducted advanced research, including doctoral dissertation research in agriculture and fisheries. (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA-AFID)
