Beyond Buzzwords: Transforming Philippine Agriculture!

Day 2: 2nd Youth in Agriculture Summit (April 22, 2022)

As part of the 2nd Youth in Agriculture Summit, the Department of Agriculture (DA), through the Office of the Undersecretary for Special Concerns, Waldo R. Carpio, hosted the Three-Minute Speech Contest and the Promotional Video Contest. It aims to provide an interactive platform for the youth to state their ideas and solutions on how they can “spark, encourage and engage other youth to develop” (SEED) new leaders in agriculture.

On April 22, Agriculture Undersecretary for High Value Crops and Rural Credit Evelyn G. Laviña led the awarding of the national awardees of the speech contest and video contest at the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) Salvador H. Escudero III Hall.

Winners of the 3-minute speech contest:

  • Top 5: Diomela Mae Peñaverde of CALABARZON
  • Top 4: Rhoanne Shyry Oregila of SOCCSKSARGEN
  • 3rd place: Christine Hope Pagsuguiron of Western Visayas
  • 2nd place: Gio Earl Clemente Laguerta of MIMAROPA
  • 1st place: Francine Beatriz Pradez of Ilocos Region

Winners of the promotional video contest:

  • People’s Choice Award: Jonh Derick Lacap of Central Luzon
  • 4th Place: Armand Roque Diaz of SOCCSKSARGEN
  • 3rd Place: Quirinian Youth in Action of Cagayan Valley
  • 2nd Place: Francis Joseph Perdigon of CARAGA Region
  • 1st Place: Quemado Brothers of Northern Mindanao
  • Grand Prize: John Vincent Gastanes of MIMAROPA

The contests were conducted in partnership with the DA-Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), Agriculture and Fisheries Information Division (AFID), and DA and ATI regional offices.

The offices of the Undersecretary for High Value Crops and Rural Credit, Assistant Secretary for Strategic Communications, Assistant Secretary for Administration and Special Concern, ATI, Agricultural Credit and Policy Council (ACPC), Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering (BAFE), Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fishery (PCAF), and the National Convergence Initiative for Sustainable Rural Development (NCI-SRD) also helped in judging the contestants.

For speech contests, winners will receive P3,000 (3rd place), P5,000 (2nd place), and P7,000 (1st place); while the top 3 finalists will get plaques from the Department.

For the video contest, winners will take home P3,000 (People’s Choice Award), P15,000 (4 runners-up), and P25,000 (grand prize). The top 5 finalists will receive certificates while the 12 finalists will have P1,000 each. ### (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA-AFID)
