Agriculture Secretary William Dar witnessed the demo-spraying of pesticide via drone over a corn farm in Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija on September 29, 2021.

The drone technology, which forms part of the digitalization of Philippine agriculture, aims to help lower the cost of production and ensure the safety of farmers.

In his message, Sec. Dar stressed that the application of pesticide and liquid fertilizer through new technology is more efficient and economical.

According to Dr. Jonar Yago, special adviser on Crop Protection of the Bureau of Plant Industry, the drone can spray 10 liters of pesticides over one hectare of land in a span of 45 minutes, with total cost of only P850. Manual spraying, on the other hand, takes about two hours to cover the same land area, with two manpower, using knapsack sprayers. The total cost amounts to P1,250.

Aside from encouraging the local farmers to adopt the modern system, the agri chief urged them to consolidate and form into clusters to avail and maximize the benefits of various services of the Department of Agriculture. (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA AFID)
