Agriculture Secretary William Dar distributed interventions in the form of machinery, equipment, and other production support to farmers in Western Visayas to enable them to be productive while harnessing resilience in facing the ongoing challenges.
On March 31, farmers’ cooperatives and associations from different provinces of Region 6, received assistance amounting to more than P200 million.
Aside from various farm equipment and inputs, Dar awarded livelihood projects to cooperatives and organizations including catfish and milkfish culture project from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, dairy expansion program from the National Dairy Authority, and milk processing facility from the Philippine Carabao Center.
Production support for rice, corn, and high-value crops, as well as livestock and fisheries, were also awarded to the provinces of Guimaras and Iloilo.
The amount sources from the Quick Response Fund will be used for the rehabilitation of food production areas affected by typhoon Odette.
During the distribution ceremony, Dar took the opportunity to thank the South Korean Government for partnering with the Department of Agriculture (DA) in establishing smart agriculture technologies including the 10 units of greenhouses in Jaro, Iloilo, which form part of the bilateral cooperation of Philippines and South Korea.
The smart greenhouses, shared by Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS), aim to increase and improve yield of various crops by presenting advanced technologies on nutrient-supplying and soil-based production.
EPIS President Jong Soon Lee expressed willingness to undertake more collaboration with the Philippines, particularly DA, and hopes to extend the project nationwide as a response to climate change. (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA-AFID)
