Agriculture Secretary William Dar, guest speaker during the First Luzon Mango Congress held on Feb. 20, 2019 at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management, proposed that good investment in agricultural research could properly handle the infestation of kurikong and other industry-specific problems facing the agriculture sector.

Recognizing that Luzon supplies 45 percent of the total mango production in the country, Dar identified strategies to prevent, manage, and control the spread of kurikong, which has been a major problem of mango producers.

He urged the mango industry stakeholders and concerned DA agencies to enhance the protocol on the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) on mango production, making use of the latest agronomy and integrated pest management practices. (Photos by Ardy Tompong, DA-AFID)
