Agriculture Secretary William Dar met with the Board of Directors (BOD) of the Food Terminal Inc., (FTI) headed by President Ariel Buenaventura on March 19, 2021 at the FTI compound in Taguig, Manila.

During the meeting, Sec. Dar committed support to the intention of FTI to reorganize and strengthen their structures. He urged the BOD to pass a resolution transforming FTI as one of the attached corporations of DA.

Napatunayan natin noong pandemic ang kakulangan sa food markets na malalaki where farmers’ and fishers’ cooperatives can bring in their produce in a big way,” Sec. Dar said.

“Let’s be one towards the directions of building food terminals as a way to fight cartels in the market,” he added.

During the meeting, FTI presented their proposals for a possible partnership with DA. It included the improvement of Kadiwa Distribution Hub, establishment of Regional Food Terminal, and establishment of FTI Mega Cold Storage Facility.

Buenaventura also showed the transformation of distribution hubs during the agri chief’s visit.

FTI also proposed to establish a Mega Cold Storage Facility valued at P1.3 billion (B) that will feature five freezer rooms at -25 degrees centigrade and a chiller room at zero degree centigrade. It will also feature the same refrigeration technology, star-wheel pipe from Taiwan and a modified rack clad.

It also seeks to embark Regional Food Terminal (RFT) in Northern Luzon (Pangasinan, BAPTC), Southern Luzon (Quezon, Batangas), NCR (Taguig), Visayas (Cebu, Bohol, and Samar), and in Mindanao (Cagayan De Oro, Davao, and Sarangani).

The agri chief said DA will prioritize their proposal should the government’s Bayanihan III pushes through. He also encouraged officials to explore the warehouse receipt system which enables producers to store their products while looking for a better price in the market.
