Agriculture Secretary William Dar met with the breeders and hog raisers under the San Miguel Food Inc. (SMFI) on February 12, 2021 in Malaybalay, Bukidnon.

The meeting was attended by SMFI representatives who recommended possible intervention from the Department of Agriculture (DA) following a recent report that it will close Monterey piggeries in Bukidnon due to African Swine Fever (ASF). The province of Bukidnon remains ASF-free.

Sec. Dar said that DA has allotted P29.5 billion to enhance the recovery and repopulation of the hog industry in the green zones areas or areas with no cases of ASF. He added that DA has set-up a loan program to commercial hog raisers under the Whole of Government measures to revive the hog industry and reduce pork prices.

To ensure that the province remains ASF-free, DA Undersecretary for Livestock William Medrano said the breeders and growers must invest in strong biosecurity control measures modernizing their facilities.

As the DA chief assured the stakeholders that the DA will help them every step of the way, he urged for their continuous support to the national government’s programs for the livestock industry of the country. (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA-AFID)
