Agriculture Secretary William Dar and Israeli Ambassador Ilan Fluss discussed efforts to strengthen the existing bilateral relations in agriculture between both countries on January 18, 2022.

During the virtual meeting, Sec. Dar informed the Israeli ambassador of the Philippine government’s willingness to pursue cooperative actions geared towards the development of the agriculture sector and improvement of crops’ production, through the implementation of the Solar Power Fertigation Project. The project has conditionally received approval from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), subject to a clear government-to-government arrangement.

Aside from the fertigation project, the agri chief and the Israeli ambassador agreed to develop a tripartite platform or digital interface where graduates of the TESDA-led program on Israeli technology in agriculture could apply their learnings and take advantage of opportunities to develop re-integration projects.

During the meeting, Sec. Dar reiterated the country’s interest to export pineapples and bananas to Israel, and sought assistance for the importation of Hass avocado planting materials.

Both officials agreed to pursue and expand technological cooperation, which will allow the Filipino farmers to learn from Israel’s approach to efficient production in agriculture by producing more with less inputs.

“The Philippines could very well learn from Israel’s cooperative (kibbutz) style of farming,” Sec. Dar said stressing on a possible collaboration to strengthen agricultural cooperatives, agribusiness clustering or farm consolidation.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Ambassador stressed that local farmers can utilize Israeli technologies in their farms to modernize their farming systems and improve production.
