Senate Hearing on Food Prices (Feb 1, 2021)

The Department of Agriculture (DA) will investigate if there is price manipulation of pork and chicken being done by the “viajeros” or traders, Agriculture Secretary William Dar said during a public hearing on rising food prices by the Committee on Agriculture, Food and Agrarian Reform joint with Committee on Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship on February 1, 2021.

“The issue on food prices in this crucial time is no laughing matter. Nakakabahala na marami ang nawalan ng trabaho at kabuhayan. At sa ngayon ay hindi alam kung saan kukuha ng pambili ng pagkain,” Sec. Dar said.

“Any increase in pork prices has a major impact in the living standard especially of the lower-income households which spend most of their income on food. Even a slight increase can confront members of the households with difficult decisions,” he added.

The DA chief presented the strategies of DA to reboot the hog industry and to lower pork prices. The strategies include increasing local production by repopulating of hogs in the green zones areas, strengthened the Bantay ASF sa Barangay, and providing credit facility for hog raisers.

He said DA will also strengthen the mobilization from surplus areas to Metro Manila. DA previously recommended a “price ceiling” for pork and chicken sold in the National Capital Region to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Under the proposal, DA will impose a price ceiling of P280 per kilogram for kasim and P310 per kilogram for liempo within 60 days in Metro Manila.

Sec. Dar also reported to the Committee that DA is now closely working with the Vietnam and USDA authorities for the procurement of African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccines.

He said that DA will continue to strengthen its quarantine control and testing capabilities through the commercialization of rapid test kits developed by Filipino researchers.
