Agriculture Chief William Dar kickstarted the launching and distribution of the Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RFFA) in Oton, Iloilo, December 9, 2021.

The RFFA program benefitted 68,808 Ilonggo rice farmers —1,378 of which hail from the Municipality of Oton. The Provincial Government of Iloilo received a total RFFA budget of 344 million (M) pesos.

Secretary Dar lauded the province’s rice farmers for achieving 135 percent rice sufficiency, with spare supplies sold to various areas in the Visayas and Mindanao.

He also celebrated the rice record harvest of 19.4 million metric tons in 2020. This, Sec. Dar said, resulted in a new target harvest of 2.4 million metric tons for this year.

The RFFA, a program under the Department of Agriculture (DA)’s Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF), provides P5,000 cash assistance to small rice farmers who work on plots of land not exceeding two hectares.

Aside from the RFFA, the DA, along with the regional offices of the Philippine Coconut Authority, Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, Agricultural Training Institute, and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, turned over indemnity checks, financial assistance, and funds for the implementation and enhancement of various agri-fishery projects in Iloilo.

Also, 22 aspiring young agripreneurs from Iloilo were also acknowledged as Provincial Level awardees in this year’s Kabataang Agribiz Competitive Grant Assistance Program by the DA-Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service. Each awardee received P50,000 as starting capital for their agribusiness ventures. ### (Photos by Gian Carlo Luague, DA-AFID)
