Agriculture Secretary William Dar led the roll-out of the Swine Repopulation, Rehabilitation, and Recovery (R3) Credit Program and the awarding of assistance to farmers affected by the animal disease, which has continued to threaten the livelihood of thousands of small, medium, and large-scale hog raisers since 2019.

Swine R3, undertaken through a partnership with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), has initial funding of P12 billion. It offers a maximum loanable amount of up to 100 percent (%) of the total project for the local government units, and 70% for private companies.

In his message during the ceremony held in Lingayen, Pangasinan on July 22, Secretary Dar urged the support of the local government units (LGUs) in the implementation of the DA repopulation program in the provinces and municipalities with reported cases.

The agri chief added that the DA cannot solve the ASF problem by itself, and stressed that the support from the LGUs is necessary and crucial.

He added that the DA, through the Bureau of Animal Industry, is now testing two prototype vaccines for ASF in 10 private companies.

“We are now in the stage of collecting blood samples to see if the antibodies of the vaccinated animals are increasing,” he said. (Photo by Alan Jay Jacalan, DA-AFID)
