Agriculture Secretary William Dar visited household and community gardens in Mandaue City, adjudged as outstanding SUGBUsog Urban Gardens, under the “Sugbuanong Busog, Luwas ug Himsog” program on June 3, 2021.

With the leadership of Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, Cebu is now on the second-year run of its program, which forms part of the province’s food security campaign and its share of the national agenda of the government to provide sufficient and sustainable food supply to all Filipinos.

The gardens, managed and owned by Jesus Cortez (household model) and Brgy. Subangdaku (community model), showcase efficient agricultural technologies including organic agriculture, aquaponics, and vertical gardening systems, among others.

“These initiatives show the importance of urban gardens in our continuous fight with Covid-19,” Sec. Dar said.

The agri chief added that to be able to triumph over the global health pandemic, it is a must to have access to nutritious food items.

“Maganda itong inisyatiba ng inyong lalawigan,” he added.

Secretary Dar stressed that the Department of Agriculture (DA) will continue to collaborate with the provincial local government unit (PLGU) of Cebu, as well

other PLGUs in the country to ensure food supply and alternative livelihood during the pandemic.

He also congratulated Gov. Garcia for leading the food production project which has ultimately lessened Covid-19 cases in the province and reduced poverty incidence. (Photo by Gian Carlo Luage, DA AFID)
