The Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) under the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) turned over to the Department of Agriculture (DA) quality seeds, seedlings, and SNAP hydroponics starter kits on September 22, 2021.

The 3S are outputs of the Research for Development (R4D) Towards Upscaling of IPB-developed Varieties and Technologies Program implemented by IPB with P30-million funding from the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) through the Bayanihan II Stimulus Package.

“We believe that we can elevate our partnership much more in this new normal environment kasi maraming kailangan ang bayan. Dapat may sapat na pagkain. Hindi lang sapat na pagkain, dapat din ang ating pagkain ay ligtas at nutritious,” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said.

The R4D program generally aims to enhance the availability of IPB-developed varieties and technologies to the seed growers and farmers and it will support the DA’s Plant, Plant, Plant Umbrella Program and Urban Agriculture Program.

Dapat itaas pa natin ang antas ng food production sa ating bansa para hindi tayo magkukulang ng pagkain, kasi hindi pa natin alam kung kailan matatapos itong Covid-19 pandemic,” Secretary Dar added.

During the program, UPLB Chancellor Jose Camacho, Jr. personally turned over the 3S to the DA-Bureau of Plant Industry Assistant Director and Urban Agriculture Program Director Gerard Glenn Panganiban.

The research and extension program’s major components are: 1) vegetables, field legumes, and root crops; 2) fruit crops; and 3) seed health and Simple Nutrient Addition Program (SNAP) hydroponics.
