Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr. led the planting of the first calamansi variety to be registered with the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) at the Bureau of Plant Industry center in Malate, Manila, on January 25, 2024.
Joining him were DA-BPI officials led by Director Gerald Glenn Panganiban, Assistant Director for Research and Development, and Production Support Services Herminigilda Gabertan, and Assistant Director for Regulatory Services Ruel Gesmundo.
The DA-BPI unveiled “Makasim” or NSIC 2023 C1 01, which was developed by a group of researchers from the Baguio National Crop Research and Production Support Division.
The ceremonial planting is in line with the celebration of the DA-BPI’s 94th Founding Anniversary. DA-BPI also organized various activities such as Kadiwa and an open house, featuring an indoor cultivation system. ### (Photos by Alarico Nuestro, DA-AFID/Jay Morales, DA-OSEC)
